Located in the Hunter Valley in Stroud NSW, the HVBA Sanctuary provides refuge, rehabilitation and re-homing facilities for Brumbies in need and who are generally rescued from passive trapping programs conducted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. We take great pride in providing a very high level of care for all of the Brumbies in preparation for their forever homes. The Brumbies enjoy large paddocks with shelters, dams to splash in and of course the lush green pastures of the Hunter Valley - please see below for our success stories so far!
The HVBA Sanctuary is also used as a teaching facility for local equine students and is also visited by local and international tourists wishing to meet a Brumby for the first time.
Visitors are welcome by appointment only.
Please email info@hvba.com.au if you would like to come and meet the Brumbies.
In the near future passive and humane trapping programs will commence through out the Hunter Valley the HVBA is a stakeholder set to receive Brumbies captured and will therefore need a much larger Sanctuary.
The larger sanctuary will provide refuge for more Brumbies, both short term and permanent home for those Brumbies not able to be re-homed.
The new Sanctuary will also provide much better teaching facilities for equine and farrier students and will be promoted as a tourist attraction for visitors. As a charity run by volunteers we need your help to save more Brumbies.

Success Stories From The Hunter Valley Brumby Sanctuary
HVBA Freya and Trooper
Trooper and Freya were part of a large consignment of Brumbies trapped by NPWS from Kosiouszko NP in July 2010 and transported to Camden Saleyards. Another long and harrowing journey found them in the abattoir in Newcastle where they were rescued by the HVBA and renowned horse trainer Adam Sutton. Both Brumbies were heavily injured and traumatised when rescued, but thanks to lots of special care here at the HVBA Sanctuary, both Freya and Trooper have now found their forever homes and have settled in very well with their new owners.
2011 Rescue
In August 2011 the HVBA headed down to Gundagai NSW to pick up Mack, Arany, Gundagai and Bella - four beautiful Brumbies trapped from Kosciouzko NP, who can now look forward to very bright futures. After a very long trip to the Hunter, all of the Brumbies are now flourishing and will soon be ready for their forever homes.
Red
Red was an older mare when she came into care at the HVBA Sanctuary and was in very poor condition and very timid. Through gentle handling and lush green paddocks, Red soon picked up in condition and was trained by Adam Sutton. Red is now back with her owner.
Diesal
Diesal is a permanent resident of the HVBA Sanctuary and privately owned by HVBA President Kath Massey. Diesal was captured as a 3 year old colt from Guy Fawkes NP and he is used extensively throughout the Hunter Valley for promotional work to
show the public just how beautiful Brumbies are.
